FAQ
Q. Can I still get a funded insulin pump?
A. Yes we can help you to apply for a Pharmac funded insulin pump. We will discuss this with your usual clinical team.
Q. Can I use an insulin pump that is not funded (such as a patch pump)?
A. Our team has a lot of experience with different insulin pumps and automated insulin delivery systems including Tandem, Medtronic, YPSO, Medtrum Nano, Omnipod and Dana insulin pumps with a range of different AID systems.
Q. Can I use a DIY automated insulin delivery system?
A. We can support people to start sensor augmented insulin pump therapy who have the intention of building their own automated insulin delivery system if their usual diabetes team are happy to continue with follow up. We will help you get set up with your chosen insulin pump and CGM to pump 'manually', however, we can not help you build a DIY system.
Q. How long does the pump start process take?
A. We usually start with an initial assessment and pre-pump education appointment. If pump therapy is right for you, then we will contact your usual clinical team and schedule your insulin pump start. The pump start usually takes less than a day and we then follow up over a period of three weeks using phone or telehealth appointments to review your pump settings. Once we have your insulin pump settings stabilised we will then discharge you back to your usual diabetes team. The whole process can be as quick as four weeks depending on availability.
Q. Can I organise a transition from one pump to another through your service?
A. Yes we can arrange that. Please contact us for more information about this.
Q. Will you talk with my diabetes team if I get started on a pump at Aotearoa Diabetes Collective?
A. Yes - we will make regular contact with your usual diabetes team, including before you start on the pump.
Q. Will I be doing the pump start with other people?
A. Generally, yes, but it depends on your individual needs.
Q. How soon can I get an appointment to get started on a pump?
A. We currently don't have a waitlist, but spaces fill up fast! We aim to see you within 2 weeks of receiving a referral. Get in touch today to start the process.
